Define how you will use it

List the table, chairs, grill, planters and walking routes that need to fit. Measure actual furniture when possible; vague labels such as dining area often lead to undersized patios.

Document the yard

Photograph doors, steps, downspouts, utilities, slopes, gates, fences and nearby improvements. Each can affect the layout and estimate.

Put the plan in writing

Ask for a defined footprint, finish, preparation, drainage approach, cleanup plan and change-order process before work begins.
